Information for Participants in the AMIR Project – ROOT

Refugee Mental Health and Integration Outcomes Over Time (ROOT)

Building a life in a new context is a challenge for most people, regardless of background, but it may be even more difficult if you have experienced difficult events and have been forced to flee your home country.

Mid Sweden University, together with Linköping University, is conducting a project that aims to investigate whether there is a relationship between mental well-being and how integrated a person feels or is in their new society.

You can participate in the project if you:

  • understand (can read, speak, and write) one of the following languages: Arabic, Dari, Farsi, English, or Swedish
  • are at least 18 years old
  • have fled your home country and are seeking or have previously sought asylum in Sweden
  • and would like to help us understand your situation regarding your mental health and your experience of integration.

How does the project work?

In this project, we will collect information about who you are, how you are feeling, and how you experience different aspects of integration (for example social, psychological, or economic aspects) by asking you to complete questions in an online survey. We want to follow your experiences over three years and will send you a new survey once every year.

Everyone who participates will answer the same questions. Each survey takes about 20–30 minutes, and after each survey you will receive a gift card worth 99 SEK sent to your email.

What happens to the information you provide?

Your responses are collected through a platform that is very secure for handling sensitive data. We treat your responses with a high level of confidentiality, and unauthorized persons will not be able to access them.

The results are analyzed and reported in a fully anonymized form and at the group level, meaning they cannot be linked to you as an individual. The results will be used in scientific reporting, such as in academic journals or at research conferences.

It is important that you understand that we do NOT use personal information for any purposes other than those described. Information that you provide CANNOT affect you in contact with other authorities or organizations. That is, no one other than the research staff—and those you choose to tell yourself—will know that you are receiving support through the project.
